Door (扉) is the origin point of the series—a bridge between traditional Japanese kacho-ga (bird-and-flower) art and the modern urban experience. It invites you to pause, observe, and find beauty in the overlooked details of our everyday surroundings. One of only 20 prints worldwide.
The Vision: In this piece, a pigeon pauses to drink from a puddle, framed by vibrant chrysanthemums. The inclusion of a discarded plastic bottle serves as a quiet nod to our modern footprint, creating a harmony between the ancient, the natural, and the contemporary. The title comes from the image of a pigeon drinking water that ripples, which also made me think of the pigeon tapping on a door. The inspiration for the contemporary kacho series comes from philosophy I learned from Japanese tea ceremony. How we take care of detail and appreciate small changes in the environment to drink matcha tea. The philosophy can apply to any circumstance of life, something fundamental yet easy to forget.
The Technique: To capture the feeling of handmade craftsmanship, this print is produced on 250g Japanese Washi. The heavy, textured fibers of the washi give the airy subject matter a physical weight. Printed via the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1100, the pigments in 12 different colors ensure that the pigeon's nuanced expression remains with color depth. It is also retouched digitally to maintain sharpness in some parts of the painting.
